From 16 to 23 October 2015 it is National Medication Adherence Week, organised by Omnicell, leading providers of medication adherence packaging and automated healthcare solutions.
This is the first year for UK-wide Medication Adherence Week, which aims to highlight the impact that non-adherence has on the nation, in terms of financial costs and crucially patient safety. It is hoped that the week will act as a focus to bring together healthcare professionals to change the alarming statistics that surround the issue.
It has long been a topic for discussion, but medication non adherence is a serious public health issue costing lives and money. Whilst non-adherence to medication currently costs the NHS a startling £300 million each year, this figure sits against a worrying backdrop of 50% of patients who are not taking their medication correctly severely compromising the effectiveness of treatment. In the EU alone, nearly 200,000 deaths occur each year due to missed doses of medication.
The week of action coincides with Omnciell’s campaign ‘Let’s take care of it’. Both of which Omnciell believe can hugely improve medication adherence – by identifying and implementing real-world solutions that impact positively on patients' health outcomes.
You can get involved by pledging your support on the campaign pledge wall and raise awareness of the cause by using the hashtag #letstakecareofit
