International Mountain Day
11 December annually

International Mountain DayInternational Mountain Day

Ever celebrated International Mountain Day before?  If not, start now!  In 2002 it was International Year of Mountains, and the United Nations General Assembly mountains designated 11 December as International Mountain Day.

Every year there is a different theme related to mountain development and awareness.  The theme for 2015 was: "Promoting mountain products for better livelihoods".  The aim of the day was to raise awareness about the challenges facing mountain communities and the importance of improving the livelihoods of those living in mountain communities.

Thankfully the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) is acting to help solve the problems faced by people living in these areas of the world.

The ICIMOD will talk to locals and explain the developments of a strong ecosystem and how it will improve the peoples' wellbeing, water, environment, and overall livelihoods.

So do you think you would like to help?   A few ideas to think about are mountain-themed workshops, book fairs, press releases or anything else you can come up with.   Any and every contribution is welcomed.   If you work at a school or university, a lecture based on this theme would be a great way to draw awareness.

I have had the pleasure of seeing some of the world's great mountain ranges, for example, Mount Everest and the Himalayas and the Rockies and I have to say their spectacular beauty never fails to amaze me!
