Aimed ach-yoo! Food allergies and their effects ... Food Allergy and Food Intolerance Week 23-29 January 2012
This year as part of Food Allergy and Food Intolerance Week,
Allergy UK
aims to help and inform everyone affected by a food allergy. While some can be more easily managed and usually result in more minor symptoms, others can be fatal. So, what is an allergy and why does it occur? It's basicallythe immune system's response to something it believes willdamage your body. It produces an antibody to attack theallergen, which then causes blood cells to release chemicalswhich aggrivate symptoms even more. Lucky us! Wheat intolerance, pollen (which causes hayfever), pet allergies, and insect stings are all common. Less common are allergieslike nuts and fruit. I myself have an allergy to some fruitsand its not at all pleasant! Allergy UK wants to help you in January if you're a sufferer or someone spends a lot of time helping them, like parents who look after young children. After finding out more about allergies, I've realised my hayfever is linked to why I'm also allergic to fruit - both types of allergens come from the birch tree! You can find all the information you need about
Food Allergy and Food Intolerance Week here.
After you're well rested from the Christmas break, why nottake action in January? Arrange your own
fundraising event
for Food Allergy and Food Intolerance Week or 'Become a friend!' This involves making a donation that will really help Allergy UK. In return you'll receive a welcome pack complete with a membership card and some important allergy-related info! If you think you might have an allergy but haven't yet beendiagnosed, arrange to have allergy tests done at your local doctor's practice.
