British Sandwich Week takes place between 8-14 May 2016 and it is a great opportunity to celebrate the one of our best loved fast foods! – the British sandwich.
It is thought that the humble sandwich was 'invented' by the 4th Earl of Sandwich. He was a keen gambler and didn't like to leave the gaming table - so rather than breaking for dinner while the game was in full swing, he asked that he was brought some meat between two slices of bread - and this was the birth of a great fast food which became known as a sandwich.
It is impossible to list huge variety of sandwiches available - the permutations and selection of ingredients is so vast, but I would like to share a couple of my favourite sandwich 'recipes' with you:
You will need: 2 x slices of bread, butter (optional), mayonnaise, freshly squeezed lemon juice, poached salmon and watercress.
Take two slices of bread of your choice - my personal favourites are seeded or wholemeal bread for this sandwich. Spread with butter, if required. Mix a small amount of good mayonnaise with some freshly squeezed lemon juice and spread over the slices of bread. Next flake the poached salmon in a bowl and then spread over one slice of bread. Break the watercress into bite size pieces and pile on top of the salmon. Top with the second slice of bread, and hey presto a great and tasty snack!
My second favourite sandwich of the moment is a:
You will need a fresh white or brown roll, butter (optional), mayonnaise, wholegrain mustard, sliced ham, sliced hard boiled egg, salad leaves.
Take a dollop of mayonnaise and mix it with a generous amount of wholegrain mustard. Spread the rolls with butter, if required and the mustard mayonnaise mixture. Add the ham and hard boiled egg slices and top with the salad leaves - a great sandwich for a picnic!
As I find more favourites I will add them to this page, but in the meantime if you have a favourite sandwich that you would like to share with us - just get in touch.
